A POPULAR Dartmoor attraction will close for good later this month.

Owners of the Miniature Pony Centre near Moretonhampstead announced this week that after more than 30 years the gates to the tourist attraction will close for the last time on Sunday, October 27.

The site, comprising 18 acres of land, a farmhouse and buildings, had been on sale for £1.35m.

In a statement, the owners said: ‘It is with great sadness we must inform you that the Miniature Pony Centre will be permanently closing at the end of the season and ceasing trade.

‘It has been an extremely difficult decision to make and not one we have made lightly.’

They went on to say: ‘As always, the welfare, health and happiness of our animals is paramount so over the winter we will be making steps to find them all wonderful homes – as well as delivering our excellent standard of care.

‘The centre has welcomed thousands of visitors over its 32 years, given hundreds of pony rides, produced lots of foals and helped create amazing family memories. We will be forever grateful for everyone who has visited the centre.

‘Season ticket holders will be in touch with you all to discuss your membership.

‘The ponies are irreplaceable, one of a kind and we can’t truly express the love we have for them.’

Hearing the news, Rose Howes from Kingsteignton said: ‘When I found out that the centre was closing, myself, my mother and my daughter all had a feeling of anguish.

‘It is such a loss not only to the family who own it, as the animals are much more than a tourist attraction.

‘It is a loss to all the families who have spent countless days out with the ponies, donkeys and other small animals.

‘I myself cannot believe it and hope that the animals are all rehomed successfully.

‘They are open this half term before closing the doors for the final time, so go and say your goodbyes.’
