ROY?PHILLIPS, of St Joseph's Court, Carlton Place, Teignmouth, writes:
We head into yet another Easter, and summer ahead, with next to nothing done to increase car parking in Teignmouth. The 'builder's yard' eyesore in Brunswick Street still remains, as does most of Teignmouth's £10m plus from the sale of Broadmeadow.
This irrespective of the fact that Teignbridge still holds hundreds of thousands of pounds not spent on replacing the car parking spaces lost in Brook Street for the then Co-op development.
Even the opportunities presenting themselves when our sea frontage was damaged by the February storms have been ignored.
There was an obvious chance to:
l increase the promenade area nearest the beach for walking;
l extend the popular children's skate and scooter park as well as;
l reduce the size of the damaged flowerbeds, giving more room for people walking and sitting on the seafront during the busy summer period.
Then we have a replacement of the Carlton Theatre. Instead of taking the opportunity to develop a multi-use attraction that could be used year round by residents and visitors, the current proposal includes another, and unwanted, restaurant.
The poverty of thinking and forward planning for this unique site is truly appalling. It seems that the main objective is to provide a long-awaited replacement theatre as cheaply as possible.
Yet again, after 40-plus years of this eyesore building, there has been little appreciation or true acknowledgement of the people who valiantly kept this previously loss-making building functioning as a theatre. This has not been recognised by the council, whose primary concern and interest seems to be serving their political masters in Westminster. This despite many, many years of meetings, consultations and promises by Teignbridge Council to Teignmouth's residents.
What the Morrisons millions' main function and purpose seems to be is assisting the district council to follow through a programme prioritising Westminster's needs over the needs of those they are supposed to represent.
What during the last three years has our town council precept of some threequarters of a million pounds been spent on? What benefit has accrued to our town and we its residents?
