SEVENTEEN war memorials across the district have been given listed status thanks to the efforts of Teignbridge Council working with Historic England and with the backing of town and parish councils.

The district authority’s design and heritage team, led by Maureen Pearce, have been putting forward war memorials for consideration for listing to commemorate those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

During the first world war centenary, Historic England’s aim is to list 2,500 war memorials in England.

As well as the 1914-1918 war, those who gave their lives in the second world war and other more recent conflicts are commemorated.

The design and heritage team at Teignbridge has visited each war memorial considered for listing. It has taken photographs and then submitted location plans and other information it has gathered.

Ms Pearce said towns and villages backed the team gathering the information it required.

The 17 war memorials that have been listed: Ashcombe, Bishopsteignton, Bovey Tracey, Broadhempston, Chudleigh, Chudleigh Knighton, Cofton, Doddiscombsleigh, Highweek, Ide, Ipplepen, Kenton, Kingskerswell, Kingsteignton, Starcross, Teignmouth (St Michael’s Church) and Teignmouth (promenade).
