AN inspirational grandad has motivated a 12-year-old Newton Abbot girl to raise funds for Rowcroft Hospice.

Martha Carthew from Knowles Hill was moved to help the charity after the death of grandad Pat Mole last year at the age of 77.

Pat, who died of cancer, was an ace fundraiser himself after serving 18 years as president of the town’s Royal Naval Association.

The retired businessman from Highweek, who helped renovate the village’s war memorial, also did charity work for Canonteign Sea Cadets.

As a tribute to him, Martha set about making vintage book-markers and special paper rose-decorated pens.

Grateful recipients included friends, family and teachers and pupils at Coombeshead Academy.

They helped the youngster raise an impressive £150 for the hospice cause.

‘She did very well. We were very pleased with her effort,’ said one of her proud family.
