A MAN has been jailed after being convicted of driving offences and the theft of a bicycle in Newton Abbot.

Jake Ormerod, 34, of no fixed abode, Newton Abbot, has been jailed for 10 months at Truro Magistrates’ Court having been convicted of a total of five offences.

Ormerod was sentenced after pleading guilty to theft of a pedal cycle, possession of a Class B drug, driving whilst under the influence of a controlled drug, driving without third party insurance and breach of a suspended sentence order.

Following concerns shared on social media, a formal crime report was received regarding a bicycle being stolen from outside a property in Newton Abbot earlier this month.

Ormerod could be seen on CCTV taking the bicycle and riding away.

Acting on this information, local officers located and arrested him a short time later.

The motoring offences also took place in the Newton Abbot area.

Ormerod was banned from driving for five years and four months at the sentencing hearing.

Inspector Sean Roper said: ‘We welcome the sentence given by magistrates to Jake Ormerod and are pleased he will spend a period of time in custody.

‘This result shows that when a crime is reported directly to us, we will investigate and bring offenders to justice’.
