A MAN and woman remain in custody following their arrest for assault during a shoplifting incident in Newton Abbot yesterday.

Police were called at just before 3.30pm on Thursday (April 30) following a report of two suspected shoplifters assaulting security staff in Courtenay Street.

Officers attended the scene and arrested the suspects.

During her arrest, the female suspect kicked an officer to the chest.

A man in his 30s from Torquay was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and two assaults by beating.

A woman in her 30s from Brixham was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, two assaults by beating and assaulting an emergency worker.

Both remain in custody at this time, Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed.
