THERE was a real sense of community spirit around Teignmouth when friends and neighbours got together to celebrate the Big Lunch. The nationwide project to get to know the neighbours was started by the Eden Project, and residents in Higher Brimley and St James Parade joined in the fun. Cars were banned from Higher Brimley Road for their party when residents brought out rugs, sofas and bean bags onto the street. More than 100 people enjoyed the singing, dancing and food which included cream teas and entertainment by resident and organist David Haines and his community choir. Face-painting was provided by Sarah van Veen while Anna Leatherdale and Dr. Ute Scholl of Devon Dance gave a dramatic demonstration of Argentine Tango ahead of classes they will be launching at the Teign Heritage Centre. Over at St James, their lunch was held in the Alice Cross Day Centre and attracted about 50 people. Ian Parkes and Louie Cameron-Fisher sang to entertain the crowds who had all brought along a contribution, either a plate of food or games. Alice Cross centre manager Julia Cross said: "We were delighted to be asked to host this community building event. "It is a wonderful idea. We need to bring communities together. 'Often people can feel isolated even in a small town like Teignmouth so this was a lovely way to meet new neighbours and share goodwill.' As well as table tennis, games and face-painting, local businesses donated items for the tombola, raising £50 which is being donated to the Alice Cross Centre. Julia added: 'It was lovely to see a mix of age ranges as the Alice Cross Centre is normally used by the over 50s. We had lots of families and children come along.' The St James community is planning to host the event again next year.
