DEVON-BASED charity Mare and Foal Sanctuary is appealing for people to help them rehome horses and ponies through their Sanctuary at Home scheme. Currently, the sanctuary has over 600 horses and ponies in care and around 30 looking for homes.

The sanctuary will never turn down an animal in need, but despite the team’s best efforts, they are struggling. The cost of living crisis has increased both the sanctuary’s overheads and the demand for its services.

Sarah Jane Williamson, Chief Executive of the Sanctuary, said: ‘Rehoming our horses and ponies with carers in the community through our Sanctuary at Home scheme allows us to make vital room in our sanctuaries for new cases. We offer sanctuary for life meaning our carers have peace of mind that should their circumstances change, and they can no longer provide sanctuary at home, the horse or pony can come back to us if they ever need to.’
