Rachael Bennett, of Teignmouth, writes:
What is happening to the lido in Teignmouth?
The seasonal opening period and hours have again been cut. The lido opened this year at the end of May and will close at the beginning of September we are told. This is a further cut to our valued community asset.
There is no possibility for working folk to swim regularly as the early morning lane swimming time has been cut from the timetable and there are now no keep fit classes for adults used by many older people trying to stay fit and healthy. We are told this is due to lack of staff, but many of us wonder if this is the whole story and are very concerned what the council’s possible long term intentions may be.
The lido is so much more than just a swimming pool, it is a social space and a lifeline to many people in the area. It seems that the lido is now aimed at the tourist season only, well that is okay but it belongs to the people of Teignmouth – we pay for it, we love it and we want to be able to use it!
