THE singing Barber of Kingsteignton is featuring in a new boxing documentary.

Paul Savva, who runs Savs Barbers, has gone from barber’s chair to the big screen with his film musical debut.

He sings his self-penned song Mantra in the new documentary Cornered: Finding Yourself in the Ring, a new documentary by Belfast filmmaker Will Craig.

The film follows a man who turned to boxing to help manage his mental health, and it premiered on YouTube yesterday, Sunday.

By day, Paul Savva runs his own barbershop, but by night, he writes and sings his own music and is often seen performing in local venues.

He said: 'I am really excited to have been approached to have my song ‘Mantra’ featured in a documentary.

‘I’ve been writing songs around cutting hair for years, so to have Mantra open a film is a proper pinch-me moment.

‘In the barber's chair you hear a lot about what men are going through, and Andy's story is exactly that: finding a way to keep going. If the song helps carry that, I’m made up.’

Cornered follows Andy Burrows, who turned to boxing to help him manage his mental health.

It is the second film in Fending Off, a seven-part Northern Ireland documentary series about people finding strength through sport and physical challenge.

Will said: ‘The first time I heard Mantra, I knew it belonged at the start of this film.

‘It has an honesty that matches Andy’s story. Paul isn’t a big-label artist, he's a working man who writes from the heart, and that realism is exactly what Cornered is about.’
