AMERICAN troubadour Rebecca Loebe is many things.

An award-winning indie-folk singer-songwriter living in Austin, Texas, a celebrated vocalist, an enthusiastic gardener, a world-traveling performer, and, occasionally, a liar.

And it’s the first and last items which will come to the fore when she visits Devon in May as part of a UK tour.

She will be bringing her interactive storytelling concert adventure called True Songs And A Lie to Broadclyst Victory Hall near Exeter on May 13.

‘The idea started during lockdown when after a decade as a full-time touring songwriter, I saw over 150 concerts canceled in the blink of an eye,’ said Loebe.

‘My entire profession disappeared overnight, so I had to get creative.’

Falling back on her university degree in audio engineering, and camera experience she picked up as a fan-favourite contestant on the first season of NBC’s The Voice, Loebe outfitted her home office into a broadcast studio and began performing online concerts to her fans around the world.

To keep things interesting I started lying in every concert,’ she continued.

‘I would perform original songs and told stories about my life and adventures on the road. At the end of the concert, audiences would guess which story was a lie for a chance to win bragging rights and a prize from my virtual merchandise table.’

The show proved such a hit with her online fanbase, that it became a a no-brainer to perform it live onstage as soon as she was able to start touring again.

And lately she’s been indulging a sneaky pastime.

‘I like to write catchy songsabout topics that are meaningful to me, but use fun hooks to put words in people’s mouths.’ she said.

‘My favourite thing is to get people singing along before they even realize they’re singing about women’s equality or their own self-worth.’
