REPORTS of smoke seen at a distance in the Kingsteignton area saw firefighters mobilised.

One appliance from Newton Abbot Fire Station responded to the incident, which took place yesterday, Monday, January 29, and upon arrival crews quickly found the source - a chimney fire.

'As the crew arrived, the occupant of the house was on the phone to our control room via 999, reporting the fire' a spokesman for Newton Abbot Fire Station said.

'The Incident Commander (IC) made the decision to "make pumps 2", resulting in our second appliance being mobilised, in order to have additional firefighters on the scene' the spokesman added.

The IC committed a firefighter to the roof to tackle the flames issuing from the top of the chimney stack - the firefighter ascended a 105 ladder, which extends to 10.5 meters, and used a hose reel to extinguish the fire from above.
