HUNDREDS more children across Devon could qualify for free school meals from September after the Government announced a major expansion of eligibility for families receiving Universal Credit.

From the start of the new school year, all children in households claiming Universal Credit will be entitled to free school meals, regardless of household income.

The change is expected to benefit many families who previously did not meet the eligibility criteria.

Devon County Council is encouraging parents and carers who receive Universal Credit to check whether they qualify and submit an application ahead of the new term.

The council says free school meals not only help reduce household costs but also ensure children have access to a healthy meal during the school day, supporting both their wellbeing and learning.

Councillor Julian Brazil, Leader of Devon County Council and Cabinet Member responsible for schools, welcomed the changes.

‘This is really welcome news for families’, he said. ‘We know many households are still feeling the pressure of rising costs, and free school meals can make a real difference.

‘As more families become eligible from September, I’d encourage parents and carers who receive Universal Credit to check whether they can apply. A healthy meal at school can have a positive impact on a child’s wellbeing and learning, while also helping families with everyday costs’.

The Government’s reforms introduce two categories of eligibility.

Children in households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less will continue to qualify for targeted free school meals.

As well as receiving free lunches, these pupils will attract additional funding for their school through the pupil premium and other disadvantage funding.

Eligibility for schemes such as the council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme and some home-to-school transport support will also remain linked to this category.

Meanwhile, children in Universal Credit households with annual earnings above £7,400 will qualify under the expanded free school meals scheme.

They will receive free school meals but will not be eligible for the additional educational funding or related support linked to the targeted scheme.

Parents and carers are being urged to apply even if they believe they qualify only under the expanded scheme, ensuring their children can benefit from free school meals when the new school year begins.
