A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to build a big new housing estate in Teignmouth is being recommended for approval in principle by planning officers to the fury of many residents.
The project on fields between New Road and Higher Holcombe Drive is for 135 homes. It could swell the population of the town by up to 500.
It is meeting with fierce opposition by hundreds of residents, and more than 200 letters of objection have been received on a variety of grounds, including increasing traffic congestion in the area, placing a burden on the infrastructure of the resort, impacting on the coastal preservation area, increasing the risk of flooding from springs in the area and detrimental to the environment and ecology of the area.
