THE achievements of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Specialty, Specialist and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors were celebrated in style at this year’s SAS Doctors Awards.

Now in their third year, the awards, which were held at Torbay Hospital on Thursday, October 16, shine a spotlight on the dedication, expertise and innovation of SAS doctors, who play a vital role in caring for our communities every day.

Colleagues from across the organisation came together to recognise those who go above and beyond to make a difference for patients and teams alike.

This year’s winners are: Learning, Research and Development – Helen Kimble; Patient Safety and Quality Improvement – Shyam Singam; Making a Difference (Leadership and Management) – Niki Burke; Respect, Teaching and Training – Anita German.

Anita German was crowned SAS Doctor of the Year for her exceptional impact on patient care, experience and outcomes and for her commitment to the training and development of colleagues.

Niki Burke also received a Special Recognition Award for her inspirational leadership as SAS Tutor and SAS Advocate.

In these roles, Niki has transformed professional development and training for SAS doctors, tirelessly advocating for them, recognising their achievements, improving working conditions and supporting career development.

Thanks to Niki’s leadership, our organisation is recognised regionally and nationally against the SAS Charter – a testament to her commitment and vision.

Niki has now stepped down from these roles to take up an exciting new position as Regional SAS Associate Dean for the South West, where her influence will continue to shape the future for SAS doctors across the region.

The evening was filled with pride and celebration as the nominations demonstrated the nominees commitment, teamwork and compassion.

Dr Kate Lissett, Chief Medical Officer, said: ‘Our SAS doctors are the backbone of many services, and their contributions often go unseen.

‘These awards shine a light on their incredible work and the difference they make every day’.

Chief Executive Joe Teape said: ‘We are immensely proud of our SAS doctors and the vital role they play in delivering outstanding care for our communities.

‘Their expertise, leadership and commitment to compassionate care make a real difference to patients and colleagues alike.

‘I would also like to thank Niki Burke for her exceptional leadership and advocacy for SAS doctors over the years, and wish her every success in her new regional role’.
