ELDERLY people are looking for a new home after the shock announcement of the closure of sheltered accommodation in Teignmouth.

Abbeyfield House, Heywoods Road, is shutting because dwindling numbers of residents mean it is no longer financially viable.

Two members of staff are affected by the closure, which is due to take place within two months.

But an assurance has been given that the house will stay open until the four remaining residents, aged between 79 and 92, are found new homes in the area. The home is run by an independent local group, but affiliated to Abbeyfield UK. It consists of nine flats and offered meals, social activities and outings, with 24-hour support.
