The ninth Charlies Trophy Golf Day has taken place at Dainton Park Golf Club.

152 Golfers took part in the Texas Scramble format as well again trying to get a hole-in-one on the eighth hole for a System6 kitchen to the value of £10,000. There were three fun competitions hosted by local businesses Repair Wizard, Mantracom and Marsh Commercials.

Citizens Advice Teignbridge hosted the eighth hole refreshments, serving locally-made steak pies from Passion for Pies and in the process received more than £200 in donations from the generous golfers.

The day raised £12,391 which has been distributed to Children’s Hospice South West, Meadowside Hall Project, Friends of Glendinning and RTS UK. The golf days have now raised more than £120,000 over the nine years and distributed to 17 different charities.

Organiser Martin Smith set up the annual golf day in 2013 after his grandson Charlie Lawlor, above, was diagnosed with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome, originally to benefit Charlie’s support group which helps children and adults around the country with this rare syndrome.

The money raised now primarily goes to local charities.

Martin and his family thanked the golfers and many local businesses who continue to support the day, after the golf, attendees were wowed by trick shot artist Dean Davis.

After enjoying the Dainton barbecue and before the prize presentation local comedian and entertainer Steve Laister hosted the charity auction extracting with great humour £4,000 for the 11 auction lots which included a signed Leeds Utd shirt, an overnight stay at the luxurious Salcombe Harbour Hotel and a week in Madeira.

For the second year running plumbers DSB Ltd won the event, with Coot Scootz and Denman’s closely on their heels.

Martin thanked everybody for their continued support, in particular his daughters Emma and Becky and their partners, the Dainton team, main sponsors System6 Kitchens and Martin’s colleagues in the Rotary Club of Newton Abbot.

There’s no rest for Martin, he is now organising the Rotary Club of Newton Abbot’s annual golf day again at Dainton on September 24.
