TEIGNMOUTH traders and local councillors have joined forces to oppose a proposed increase in street car parking fees.
They are angry at the county council's plan to hike the parking meter charges by ten per cent from April, saying it will hit retailers.
'And to rub salt into the wound, in towns where charges are yet to be introduced, the first half-hour will be free, putting our businesses at a disadvantage,' said Cllr Don Baldey, chairman of the town council finance and general purposes committee.
'We are trying everything we can to encourage people to come here. Teignbridge Council is freezing its parking charges, which helps, but it is being undermined by these proposed county council increase.
'What makes me really angry is that Teignmouth will not be treated fairly compared to other towns in the South Hams and east Devon.'
One of Teignmouth's longest serving traders, Mike Jackman, of Jackman's Toy Box, in Teign Street, said any increase in parking fees could be the final straw for some retailers.
'I have been trading for 16-years and this is one of the most difficult economic situations I have witnessed. Traders could face going to the wall and need all the help they can get.
'Parking charges in town centres should be reduced – certainly not increased – and I hope the county council has a change of heart.'
Councillors and traders have combined to organise a petition opposing any increases and it is available to sign in many shops.
