THERE were many shouts of ‘oyez, oyez, oyez!’ as Newton Abbot played host to the annual town crier’s competition.

A total of 14 criers, members of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, took part in front of Austins The Globe throughout the day.

Kelly Burridge, of Newton Abbot Town Council, said: ‘It was a very colourful (and somewhat noisy!) event. Crying is very much a forerunner to today’s daily newspapers as it’s an early form of relaying newsworthy items that dates back centuries.’
