IT is nearly 20 years since Teignmouth’s community became aware that a major change was on the cards for their much-loved hospital.
One of the two wards was ear-marked for close, removing only 13 re-hab beds to support those in need.
Local historian Viv Wilson MBE decided to organise a demonstration against this cut and persuaded more than 300 people to gather in The Triangle on a Saturday morning to stage a silent protest – large banners told the story.
People stood still and remained silent for 15 minutes.
Now – all these years later, Viv is using Facebook and email to gather comments from locals who are determined that Teignmouth Hospital should have the rehab beds replaced and the building return to being fully operational.
Names and comments gathered so far cover more than 30 sheets of A4.
Viv said: ‘When the CCG announced their intention to close the hospital and build a new Health Hub in Brunswick St, the public was provided with a complex questionnaire to complete.
‘It seems the majority of locals are against that plan- they really want to keep what we have.”
The Heath Minister responded favourably to Devon County Councils Health & Scrutiny Committee’s request to bring in the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP) to revisit the CCG’s unpopular proposals. Viv concluded “ Covid has altered so many elements of life and shown up the flaws and shortcomings of the present arrangements. The IRP will accept comments and peruse them as evidence for their report to the Health Minister.’
There is still time to write just one sentence as to why you believe Teignmuoth Hospital should remain open. Email to [email protected] by Sunday, November 28, to be included
