Moves to save Pirate Festival

A last-ditch effort has been launched to try and save Brixham’s award-winning Pirate Festival.

Organisers had announced they were cancelling the popular event in May after falling far short of the £30,000 needed.

Now an online fundraising campaign has been set up which has already raised more than £4,000.

One 10-year-old girl has donated her £6 weekly pocket money to the cause.

Chairman Peter a Berresford explained: ‘We haven’t received a Fairy Godmother, yet, but we have been approached by a couple of Fairy Godaunties, who are looking to help us.

‘The amounts being talked about will not cover our shortfalls alone, but they have made the potential for us meeting it much more within grasp.

‘There is land in sight for our glorious festival.

‘To that end, we are going to re-enable donations on our GoFundMe page until the cut off date of February 5.

‘We cannot guarantee that all donations from the date of the cancellation announcement can be refunded if our funding goal is not reached, but we will endeavour to do so.

‘As always, any additional funds past this year’s goal will go towards next year’s festival.

‘Your messages of support and love have reignited our spirits.’
