Sports clubs are also feeling the effects of the economic downturn, as well as businesses.

Golf clubs are being particularly badly hit, and now the Teignmouth club is organising an open day to try to attract more members.

It was only a few years ago that the club had a waiting list of several years, but those prosperous days have long gone.

So, on Saturday, March 28, people interested in taking up the game and joining the club are invited to the magnificent clubhouse on Little Haldon, which has panoramic views over the coast and countryside.

There will be two presentations, at 10.15am and 2.45pm, outlining what is on offer. And, as a special offer, the normal £200 joining fee is being waived.

The clubs admits it has a cash flow problem, which had been addressed by using the scenic setting of the clubhouse for wedding receptions and a host of other functions.

'Hiring out the clubhouse helps to cover our overheads, and we aim to continue along that road.

'But we really need to address the problem at source, and build back the membership levels to make sure we operate in a viable manner,' said one member.

'Many golf clubs are in the same position, but we are taking positive action to attract and welcome new members.

'We have a good golfing and social reputation, and if anybody is interested in what is on offer, but cannot make the open day, they can always call us on 01626 777070 and speak to Ian Evans, our secretary and general manager, to find out more.'
