The 11th Charlies Trophy took place at Dainton Park Golf Club on Friday the 14th July.
Despite the most atrocious weather the day raised £14,430.
The annual golf day called Charlies Trophy, named after the organiser’s grandson Charlie Lawlor.
Originally set up to raise funds for Charlie’s support group RTSUK – Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome it has over the last few years expanded to make donations to over 20 different charities mainly local, to which £135,000 has been donated.
The fantastic sum his year was raised by the support of many local businesses with the main ones being System Six Kitchens, Darnells, DSB Ltd, Repair Wizard, Sherwoods, Mantracom, Marsh Commercial and Charles Darrow.
The beneficiaries this year were Combe Pafford School Minibus Appeal (Charlies school) The Exeter Leukaemia Fund, Dartmoor Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy and RTSUK.
The field of 148 golfers put up with continual rain from the start to finish, resulting in a 2 hour halt, to the credit of the Dainton Park Greenkeepers 17 teams managed to complete the 18 holes Texas scramble format.
Winners on the day were TF Solutions from Exeter with 52.1 points led by Nick Reynolds.
Organiser Martin Smith praised the golfers saying: ‘The patience , generosity and good humour attributed to the excellent monies raised, it had to be the most demanding of the many golf days I have organised.
‘The barbecue moved indoors, we cancelled some of the on course competitions, undoubtedly more would have been raised by the auction, with some excellent donated lots including signed F1 memorabilia, Manchester Utd and Exeter Chiefs shirts and a years membership to Winners Gym.’
Martin added: ‘As always putting on an event in the UK is a challenge, but the outcome for the good causes concerned makes it worth the 100’s of hours it takes organising – my family and I will be doing it again next year on 26th July 2024.
