HUNDREDS of residents and visitors enjoyed a spectacular bank holiday harbour festival in Teignmouth, up and running in the resort for the second year.

From its heyday in the 1980s when it was known as Fiesta, the festival this year ran for three days and provided fun-packed entertainment.

Event spokesman and town councillor Jacqui Orme said: 'It helped promote the true holiday spirit and hospitality that Teignmouth can offer as well as providing the opportunity to collect for local charities.'

Opened by the mayor of Teignmouth, Cllr David Cox, the traditional Blessing of the Boats ceremony followed, conducted by all denominations and accompanied by Teignmouth Community Choir with authentic sea shanties from Mariners Away.

The entertainment included urban art workshops, crab fishing competition, seafood preparation demonstration, fun dog show, face painting, mask making, sandcastle building competition, children's tug of war, egg and spoon races, sack races and fancy dress competition.

There was drama in the raft race with a team from the Ship Inn caught in a strong tide and heading towards Shaldon.

As their raft disintegrated, they were helped to the shore without coming to any harm.

The event was organised by members of the Teignmouth Estuary Rotary Club assisted by Vanessa Grantham, of the Ship Inn.

Organisers were also grateful for support from other groups who gave their time and effort including Dawlish Warren Surf Lifesavers, Teignmouth firefighters, the harbourmaster, Teign Valley sea cadets and Teignbridge Council.
