CONTROVERSIAL Network Rail works on the sea wall at Dawlish have been put on hold.

Just before the Christmas break, engineers discovered the sandstone base underlying the concrete foundations was failing.

The works, which were scheduled to resume after the holidays, have now been delayed until a solution can be found.

The headache could potentially add millions of pounds to the project’s costs.
