AFTER a two year break Moretonhampstead Carnival makes a welcome return to the moorland town at the end of this month.

Since 1921, on the fourth Thursday in August, Moretonians have been celebrating their carnival and this year is no exception.

A small committee works extremely hard to keep this tradition alive, which means following the pandemic-enforced break, Thursday, August 25  will be carnival day for the town.

And kick-starting the fun the Saturday before the main event will be the Moretonhampstead Carnival Food and Drink Festival, which also makes a welcome return.

Between 10am and 4pm on August 20, the town’s Cross Street will feature a stalls and tables groaning under the weight of some of the best produce Devon has to offer.

‘We have a variety of exhibitors eager to showcase their goods who are awaiting you to taste the very best local food and drink that Devon has to offer,’ said festival organiser Sam Parkin.

‘Many of  our favourite regulars will be returning including Papillion Dartmoor Gin and Passion for Pie with many new additions such as Sophies Bangin Bakes and Simon’s Kitchen.

‘We’re hoping people will come along and join us for the day as we are extremely proud of our town and Carnival and we are looking forward to showing you what we have to offer.’

Entry to the festival is free of charge and proceeds from the event will go to Moretonhampstead Carnival which supports local charities.
