IT may be 50 years old, but Shaldon Water Carnival is looking as fresh as ever and still pulling in the crowds.

The village was packed for the fun and frolics on and near the river on Saturday, and hundreds also lined the Point beach area cross the river at Teignmouth to watch the highlight, the parade of decorated boats around the estuary.

It is now thought to be a unique event, and Cllr Chris Clarance broadcast live on a regional radio station about his late fathers involvement with the early days of the water carnival in the 1950s.

And a television company was also filming the event, which had a seafood theme, for a series it is producing on a cookery-celebrity chef programme.
