DRILL night for one of Dartmoor's crack team of firefighters saw them get to grips with farming machinery.

The great and the good from Chagford Fire Station spent their most recent drill night familiarising themselves with some for the equipment used by farmers, which is especially important given the make up of the crews patch.

Farm fires can be devastating, resulting in the loss of machinery, livestock, stores of hay and straw, and the destruction of buildings; there are often lots of combustible materials stored in or around agricultural buildings.

And the isolated location and sometimes poor water supply mean that there is a risk of farm fires getting out of control - hot, dry weather can increase the risk of wildfires spreading.
