FIREFIGHTERS from five stations worked together to contain a fast-moving wildfire near Ashburton on Tuesday evening after flames spread across two fields and a hedgerow.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls reporting a fire in the open shortly before 7pm on July 14.

Fire engines from Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Newton Abbot and Totnes were mobilised, along with a 4x4 appliance from Bovey Tracey and a water bowser from Torquay.

Crews from Totnes and Newton Abbot were initially dispatched to the incident near River Dart Country Park, while firefighters from Bovey Tracey were diverted from another emergency to assist.

On arrival, crews found the blaze had spread rapidly across a field, into a hedgerow and a neighbouring field, placing a stable outbuilding at risk.

The incident commander requested further resources as firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading.

Firefighters from Totnes and Ashburton used hose reel jets and beaters to halt the fire's advance and protect the threatened buildings.

Meanwhile, crews from Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot tackled the blaze in the second field.

After several hours of firefighting in challenging, hot conditions, crews successfully brought the incident under control.

No buildings were damaged, and the fire was prevented from spreading further across the surrounding countryside.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to take extra care during the warmer months, warning that even a small spark can quickly develop into a significant wildfire.

Motorists are also reminded not to park over fire hydrants, ensuring firefighters can establish a water supply quickly when responding to emergencies.
