FIREFIGHTERS from across Teignbridge amassed at Trago Mills this week for a large-scale training exercise.

Crews from Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Bovey Tracey, Newton Abbot and Torquay spent Tuesday night at the discount department store for the multi-station exercise.

A joint initiative between Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service and the Trago Mills’ Health & Safety team, it had originally been planned several weeks ago, but was postponed due to a significant incident in the South Hams.

The mock scenario involved a fire in an electrical installation unit, with at least one person unaccounted for.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the building with safety jets, while conducting a search for the missing staff member.

The situation then escalated as the ‘fire’ spread into the main retail area, with multiple staff members unaccounted for.

In total, nine firefighters in breathing apparatus were committed to search and rescue operations, successfully locating eight casualties.

A spokesperson for Bovey Tracey Fire Station said: ‘Exercises like this are vital for ensuring we stay sharp, prepared, and fully equipped to respond to real emergencies all while strengthening our partnerships with local businesses and communities.

‘A huge thanks to Trago Mills and their staff for their cooperation and ongoing support!’
