RESIDENTS living near a Chudleigh pub fear plans to extend its beer garden opening hours will impact on their quality of life.

The Globe Inn in Fore Street has applied to Teignbridge Council to allow opening until 1am on Friday and Saturdays and to 12.30am the rest of the week.

Eight objections have been received against the plans while there were three representations in support.

Teignbridge Council’s Licensing and Regulatory Sub-Committee will discuss the application on October 3.

Objectors say they have already complained of excessive noise late at night; ‘alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour’; customers ‘loitering’ outside after closing and littering.

One said: ‘Chudleigh has a strong sense of community.

‘This type of late-night activity offers no positive benefit to local residents or businesses.

‘It risks damaging the peaceful character of the area and will deter rather than attract family-friendly trade.

‘Residents have the right to reasonable peace and quiet in their homes, especially during night-time hours.

‘Given ongoing issues we have already experienced, there is every reason to believe that extending the hours will significantly worsen the impact on our quality of life.’

The plans centre around the use of a beer garden and ‘snug’ which are not directly attached to the pub itself.

The new owners, who took over in 2024, are keen to include live music and entertainment until 1am.

But the noise levels are causing concern to some residents who fear it will create unacceptable levels of noise.

One objector said: ‘We appreciate the important role the pub plays in the community and are pleased to see if thriving but the current proposals is too disruptive for a residential setting.’

Supporters say the pub has become a ‘strong supporter of the community’ and believe it will have a positive impact on the town.

One said: ‘The new owners have done a great job in rebranding, renovating and making the Globe a more enjoyable place to be.’

But residents living nearby claim the additional hours and use of the beer garden will have an adverse effect.

One objector said they were ‘frustrated that the proposal seems to completely disregard the needs of local residents’.

They said: ‘The pub is located in a neighbourhood where many people including families with young children rely on a quiet environment late into the event.

‘This application is wholly incompatible with the needs and rights of the community.’

One neighbour said she had previously complained to Teignbridge Council regarding noise from the pub and an increase in anti-social behaviour, including fights, in Fore Street.

However, no representations to the committee have been received from either police or environmental health.

Other objectors claim the levels of disturbance are ‘unreasonable’.

One said: ‘The garden area is not attached to the pub so customers need to leave the premises, pass along a residential street and small car park then gather in open garden area, a considerable distance from the Globe and adjoining residential dwellings.’

The application states there will be notices at all exits asking patrons to respect the needs of local residents and to leave as quickly and quietly as possible.
