ONE of Bovey Tracey’s longest-running businesses has closed.

Bovey Handloom Weavers have been in the town for more than 80 years, but owners Liz and Stuart Gregory have decided it was time to retire.

The company was begun in 1938 by Liz’s father, Angus Litster.

Angus came down from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders in 1934 to show the weavers at Dartington Hall how the skill was practised the Scottish way.

He liked Devon so much he decided to stay and married a local girl, Kathleen Aggett from Chudleigh.

And so in 1938 he set up a workshop in Station Road, Bovey Tracey, and began making fine woollen cloth and garments.

Stuart came on board to assist Angus some 50 years ago, having previously worked in a bank.

After Angus died in 1985 his widow Kathleen carried on the business, and when she died in 1990 her daughter Liz and her husband Stuart took over. They continued to run the shop and weaving business for the next 28 years.
