THE funeral takes place today of former Newton Abbot mayor Di Nicholls.

Tributes have been paid by Newton Abbot Labour Party to the former town and district councillor who died at the age of 99.

A party spokesman said she had been an active member up until the last few years.

In a statement, the party said: ‘We we very sad to announce the death of one of our long-standing members Di Nichols.

‘She had an amazing sense of humour and we will miss her.’

Former police officer John Fisher also paid tribute.

He said: ‘I remember with fondness our chats when we met in Newton Abbot, me on the beat as the town constable and she walking into town.

‘It was her enthusiasm, passion and vibrancy that shone through.

‘The citizens of Newton Abbot have lost a staunch supporter.’

Described as a ‘true lady of the people’, Mrs Nichols served as a councillor for many years and was a former chairman of Teignbridge Council.

She was awarded the a Freedom of Newton Abbot in 2013 for her services.
