West End hit comedy musical Mrs Doubtfire heads to Theatre Royal Plymouth this autumn as part of a UK and Ireland tour.

Based on the blockbuster 1993 film starring Robin Williams, the musical tells the story of freelance voice actor Daniel Hillard, who loses custody of his three beloved children when he and his wife Miranda get divorced.

The break-up is partly triggered by his immature behaviour and the fact that he’s just lost his latest job.

When Miranda advertises for a nanny/housekeeper, Daniel disguises himself as an elderly woman and successfully applies for the position in the character of Euphegenia Doubtfire - solving his unemployment problem as well as enabling him to spend time with his kids.

The ensuing sequence of events, as Hillard is forced to juggle his two identities, provides plenty of farcical comedy. But underlying it all is the story of how Hillard, having to live up to the role of an old-fashioned Scottish nanny instead of a madcap dad, develops a more responsible attitude. Becoming Mrs Doubtfire turns Daniel into a better version of himself.

Inevitably, Daniel’s double life can’t last. The pretence is uncovered and Miranda leaves with her kids and new partner. But the children realise life was happier with Mrs Doubtfire, and Daniel - as his true self - is granted unlimited access to them.

Meanwhile, he has landed a job hosting a new children’s TV show as the Mrs Doubtfire character, who becomes a star.

Gabriel Vick, who played Hillard in the West End, continues in the role for the tour. His ex-wife Miranda, who was played by Sally Field in the film, is portrayed by Kara Lily Hayworth.

Mrs Doubtfire runs at TRP from Thursday, October 29 until Saturday, November 7. Tickets are available now from the venue’s website https://theatreroyal.com
