WHAT a whopper! This hen's giant egg measures about 7ins across, and is believed to be just short of the world record for size.

It was laid by a hen belonging to Teignmouth schoolboy Joe Walton, who has set up his own egg business at the age of 13.

He 'rescued' a flock of battery hens from a farm at Plymouth when the owner wanted to dispose of them, and they are now happily roaming freely on land at Shaldon.

'It is enormous, and we will be cooking it ourselves. It will be interesting to see how many yolks it has,' said Joe, of Alexandra Terrace.

'I think it is only about three centimetres short of the world record.'

Joe has more than 30 hens, which he bought for £1 each to save them from the slaughterhouse, and sells the free range eggs to teachers at Teignmouth Community College, where he is a student, for pocket money. He even has his own labels to put on the cartons.

Dad Paul reckons the taste of the eggs is 'exceptionable', and said customers could not get enough of them.

He added; 'I think it is great that Joe has set up his own little business, and he ploughs most of the money back into buying more chickens and feed.'
