ATTEMPTS were due to have been made to remove a pontoon which had drifted from East Devon to Dawlish Warren.

The floating pontoon had been spotted on the beach near Groin 9 a few weeks ago and was thought to have come across the River Exe.

However, it had become damaged recently and released some polystyrene balls.

Cllr Rosie Dawson explained that Teignbridge Council staff had been clearing as much as possible and had put barriers in place.

Efforts were being made to return it to its owner.

The Environment Agency had also been made aware. A group of sea swimmers who regularly swim at Dawlish Warren had also reported the pontoon’s position on the beach to the council and Environment Agency.

One Warren visitor said: ‘Terrible to see today the environmental damage and danger this is causing to Dawlish Warren beach.’

Cllr Dawson added: ‘I will be asking what’s been going on behind the scenes to facilitate getting this pontoon moved since it landed because this was inevitable and avoidable.’
