POLICE are urging the public to be aware of opportunist thieves on Dartmoor following a string of thefts from vehicles.

The Ashburton and Chudleigh Policing Team say vehicles parked at Hemsworthy, Cold East Cross and Haytor have been targeted recently.

This comes as visitors flock to the area to enjoy ‘Bluebell season’ close to Holwell Lawn, Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

‘Thieves are currently targeting older style vehicles where doors, windows and boots have been forced to remove bags, purses and wallets’ a spokesperson for Ashburton and Chudleigh Policing Team said.

A 2009 mini-bus containing bags belonging to students practicing for the Duke of Edinburgh Award was also targeted, police say.

‘If you are heading to Dartmoor (or indeed anywhere) then ensure you empty your vehicle of valuable belongings’ the spokesperson added.

‘Do not attempt to hide bags under seats or store valuables in the boot etc.

‘Be vigilant, consider the possibility of someone watching your vehicle to see what you do before leaving. If you see something suspicious take note of the registration plate and report via 101.’
