THE historic Shaldon ferry service across the estuary is in danger of closing again.

The operator, Greg Allen, who took on the lease last year, confirmed that 'a problem' had arisen, and he may have to cease working soon.

He did not want to specify why, but it is understood it is personal, rather than anything to do with profitability.

'All will be explained soon, but at the moment everything is up in the air, and it may be too difficult for me to carry on. I certainly cannot carry on in the present form, but I am working with Teignbridge Council, who have been very understanding, to see if we can find a solution,' he said.

'It is a very difficult situation for me and I am sorry for any inconvenience it may cause, but I have little option.'

Teignbridge leader Cllr Alan Connett said he was fully aware of the problem faced by Mr Allen, and he and the officers were trying to help him as much as possible.
