TEIGNBRIDGE Council has stuck to its guns about a decision to sell the former Shaldon ferryboat workshop to the highest bidder.

On Tuesday, the ruling executive fought off a challenge to have the building sold instead to the village's regatta association, a move it said would rob the authority of almost £100,000.

In December the council agreed the sale to an anonymous bidder for £200,000, almost twice the association's offer of £102,500. It claimed both bids offered guaranteed community use of the facility.

That decision was called in by the watchdog overview and scrutiny committee and on Tuesday the meeting at Forde House, Newton Abbot, heard from association member Ray Edworthy who claimed youth sailing might be 'in jeopardy' without the boat storage the workshop offered.<
