Michael Bowman’s March 25th auction at Chudleigh Town Hall will feature a modern oil painting on panel by the short-lived Liverpool artist, Brian Shields.

Born in 1951, the young Shields showed artistic talent during his school years and was given the nickname ‘Braaq’ after the French artist,Georges Braque.

His best known subjects are industrial scenes recalled from his childhood days in Liverpool, populated by match-stick figures in a style reminiscent of Lowry.

The snow scene on offer this month, is simply signed with his nickname, ‘Braaq’ and also with the name of his sister, Ann, who died when just 21 and to whom he dedicated all subsequent paintings.

During the 1970s, when this work was executed, The Times described Shields as one of the six most successful contemporary English painters.

Bids of £4,000 to £6,000 are anticipated.
