A decision is expected next week on plans to demolish the old Brigantine chandlery business in Shaldon and develop luxury £250,000 beach huts on the prime waterside site.

The scheme is supported by district planning officers but has divided opinion in the community.

The parish council, which claims to have the measure of local opinion, is concerned about the loss of shops and wants the existing 1960s building converted into four retail outlets which it said would provide jobs.

It also said there was no need for beach huts and that parking would cause congestion.

But 24 letters of support for the project have been submitted and the district council's tourism department has said the huts would enhance the beach front.

The matter is due to be discussed by members of Teignbridge Council development control committee at Forde House, Newton Abbot, on Tuesday.

Members will be told before voting that when seven of their colleagues visited the site five had come out in favour and two against.

Those opposing it felt the scheme would set a precedent, be out of keeping and rob the village of retail space.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is due to start at 9.45am.
