DARTMOOR-based campaigner Kate Ashbrook has won The Great Outdoors magazine’s personality of the year award.
A trustee and former president of the Dartmoor Preservation Association, she topped a shortlist of 11 which included mountaineers Sir Chris Bonnington and Alan Hinkes, and fellrunner Jos Naylor.
The general secretary of the Open Spaces Society – which is 150 years old this year – for 31 years, she was nominated as ‘a fearless and knowledgeable campaigner for our rights in the great outdoors’. She is also president of the Ramblers GB, a trustee of the Campaign for National Parks, and a patron of the Walkers Are Welcome Towns Network.
