FORTHCOMING open heart surgery did little to dampen one father’s spirits when celebrating his daughter’s eighteenth birthday at one of Teignbridge’s most beloved restaurants.
Peter Spencer, who lives in Teignmouth, surprised daughter Elsie-Rose on Sunday, January 29, with a meal at Pizza Cafe to mark her turning 18 years old; a celebration which the father of two hopes will not be his last with his family.
‘I wanted to do something special for my daughter, Elsie-Rose, for her 18th birthday meal’ Peter said.
‘I knew she liked pizza and so I decided to book a table at Pizza Cafe in Newton Abbot.
‘When booked the table I explained to them that not only was it her special birthday, but also the last meal we could have as a family before I have open heart surgery in London.
‘I am terrified and think that I might even die during the operation’ he added.
With a valve closing up, Peter is in need of replacement; the surgery will necessitate the travel to London.
The surgery could, it is true, be performed at Derriford Hospital. However, prevailing risk of cancellation means that Peter must visit the capital for the operation instead.
‘I took a lot of things along and a birthday cake and the staff at Pizza Cafe put it all in their back room,’ Peter said.
‘When we got there it was such a surprise for Elsie-Rose,’ he added.
Notwithstanding the busy atmosphere, staff at Pizza Cafe took the time to decorate the Spencers’ table, as well as the restaurant itself, with birthday-themed decor.
‘The day meant a lot to me as it was a special surprise to remember my 18th birthday and the staff were so nice.
‘I loved the way they decorated the table area for me even though they were very busy,’ Elsie-Rose said.
Staff went further still, giving their recommendation for Elsie-Rose’s first, legal, alcoholic beverage.
‘It was Elsie-Rose’s first alcoholic drink so they suggested a nice fruity cocktail that just has a little Bacardi in it!’ Peter said.
‘She really liked it and once again they were trying their best to suggest something that would be nice for her first drink’ he added.
A birthday cake was then brought out, whereupon staff and customers alike broke out into birthday song.
‘When I went to pay the staff member on the till even said good luck for the operation,’ Peter said.
‘If and when I survive, Pizza Cafe is the first place we will go for my celebratory meal’ he added.
