FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were called in to help tackle a flat fire in Torquay during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received multiple reports of smoke and flames at a property on Torwood Street just before 3am on July 5.

Initially, crews based in Torquay and Paignton were sent, before an additional fire engine from Newton Abbot, and an aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle, were called.

The fire started in a first-floor flat before spreading into the roof void, the fire service say.

Firefighters carried out a precautionary search of the property, confirming nobody was inside.

The fire was then put out; the cause is believed to have been accidental.
