IN THE wake of National Cream Tea Day which celebrated the more usual scones version, there’s a chance to sample a rarer treat for a good cause.
Catherine Harris has organised a Tea at Three event for Tuesday, July 18 at the United Reform Church Hall in Church Street, Kingsteignton, and she’s already busy baking a traditional recipe to dish up.
She and her team will be serving tuffs instead of the commonplace scone, as well as cakes and teas and coffees.
Catherine explained: ‘Tuffs is the Kingsteignton name for Devonshire splits, or Chudleighs.
‘The recipe was handed down to me and dates back to 1880. We always had tuffs at parties many years ago with cream and jam.
‘I suspect the traditional cream tea was made using tuffs and not scones, but, as bakers don’t seem to make them nowadays, scones are used instead.’
The tea starts at 3pm and will conclude at 4.30pm - all proceeds will go towards Rowcroft Hospice.
