TEIGNMOUTH councillors have said no to a controversial plan to concrete over green hills with hundreds of houses and a major new road.

They are utterly opposed to the scale of the housing vision for the resort in the next 20 years in the Teignbridge core strategy development plan.

Both Tory and Lib-Dem members of the town council spoke out strongly against the proposal to build over 1,000 new homes on fields to the west of Teignmouth, which could swell the population by nearly a quarter, and gouge a major road through the countryside from Broadmeadow to the top of the Exeter Road.

Councillors were adamant that the town's infrastructure just could not cope with the extra people and cars, without massive and hugely expensive improvements.

But they supported creating more jobs, especially for young people, and building more affordable homes.

And representatives of several local organisations also lined up at a special council meeting on Monday to condemn the expansion.<
