NOT surprisingly, the planned £20 million Morrisons supermarket revamp of Broadmeadow, Teignmouth, was greeted with enthusiasm by Teignbridge councillors.

It appears to be a win-win situation, with the rundown areas being redeveloped around a 2,000 sq m store, including new roads, the de-contamination of sports pitches, and workshop units.

Other goodies are the promise of 225 new jobs – plus up to 75 more in the summer season – and a reputed £9.5million donation to Teignbridge Council coffers.

The overview and scrutiny committee heard a presentation from Morrisons representatives on Tuesday, who outlined the store's green credentials and pledged to work with the community on the design and construction.

Development executive Mark Thompson said work would start in February next year, and be completed by early 2012.
