NEWTON Abbot Town Council has raised no objection to plans to turn a former car parts retailer into a laundrette.

Submitted by Pettit TQ Ltd, the application - reference 26/00919/FUL - is seeking permission from Teignbridge District Council to split 128 to 130 Queen Street, which was once the home of Motormart before it relocated to Olympus Business Park, into two, separate units.

The proposed units will comprise a flexible commercial unit intended for office use and a commercial launderette, the planning statement for 26/00919/FUL says.

The development will maintain active commercial uses within Newton Abbot town centre, improve flexibility for future occupation, enhance the appearance of the building and provide a useful community service through the introduction of a launderette’, the statement says.

And at a recent meeting of its planning committee, Newton Abbot Town Council raised no objection to the proposal.

Teignbridge District Council are expected to make a decision by July 31.

According to the planning statement, the subdivision of the larger retail unit into two, separate commercial premises will: increase opportunities for occupation by independent businesses; improve flexibility within the local commercial market; maintain active ground floor frontages; encourage investment within the town centre and support local employment opportunities.

The laundrette will provide both self-service laundry facilities and a service-wash operation, with customers being able to undertake laundry on-site or leave items for processing by staff.
