POLICE could not believe their eyes when they spotted a motorist in Newton Abbot driving through the town with a garden shed loosely fixed on the roof of his car.

They had to look twice after seeing the vehicle-dwarfing apparition making its way along The Avenue.

A spokesman revealed that the comical but potentially hazardous load was secured with just a single rope – and no roof rack. Sgt Olly Tayler admitted in a tweet after the matter came to light: ‘It could have ended far worse than a ticket for an insecure load.’

Sgt Tayler said he ‘didn’t quite believe’ what he had seen, adding: ‘If you’re carrying a load on your vehicle please make sure it’s secure.’
