OOOH ARR shipmates! A company has donated a day’s profits to a South-West based charity following Talk Like a Pirate Day 2021 celebrations.
BuyRope supplies rope to customers for both domestic and commercial uses and in their own words: ‘love rope so you don’t have to’.
On Sunday, September 19 the company donated 100 per cent of the day’s profits to Go Beyond, a charity based in Devon whose goal is to give children who have experienced serious hardship an experience they will never forget.
This was in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day, an annual holiday originating in the US.
First launched in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers or, to use thier Pirate aliases, Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy respectively, the original aim of Talk Like a Pirate Day was to highlight the form of English that pirates, stereotypically spoke.
At present, however, the internationally celebrated holiday is used to raise awareness of more pressing issues such as cancer research or, in this instance, issues regarding the wellbeing of children.
Go Beyond is a charity that provide children across the UK with free respite breaks. The charity focuses on giving disadvantaged children a chance to escape from their worries and be alleviated, albeit briefly, from the pressures exerted upon them. The work done by Go Beyond is vital, being described as a ‘lifeline for children and young people. This proved to be especially true during the height of the pandemic.
The charity’s mission is ‘to give every young person the moments and experinces they need to believe in themselves and think beyond the day-to-day for a bigger, brighter future’ and was chosen by BuyRope following a monthly Facebook poll the company uses to determine what organisation will receive a helping hand by BuyRope. Go Beyond topped this poll and owing, to the customers of BuyRope, received a generous £111 from the company.
A representative for Go Beyond said: ‘the money raised will enable a child to come to a break and spend time outdoors doing treasure hunts, magic tricks, painting, gardening, bush-craft sessions and team building activities.’
